6 common hazards in warehouses

Warehouses play a crucial role in the supply chain, storing, retrieving and shipping out the products many people rely on every day. However, the tools and products involved in these important locations can also lead to various dangers that might cause injuries at work. What are some common risks in warehouses?

Forklifts

Forklifts are essential in many warehouses for moving large items. Despite their usefulness, they can be hazardous. Accidents may happen from not using them correctly, not enough training for drivers, or mechanical problems. Crashes involving people walking, items falling off, or the forklift tipping over can lead to serious injuries or even death. In fact, forklift incidents resulted in almost 25,000 injuries between 2021 and 2022 and played a role in 73 workplace deaths in 2022 alone.

Items on warehouse shelves

Goods stored on high shelves can be dangerous if they are not properly stacked and handled. If items fall, they can hit workers, causing head injuries or other severe damage. Overloading or poorly stacking shelves can also weaken the structure of the storage setups.

Trip hazards

In a busy environment like a warehouse, a cluttered or badly kept floor can easily cause trips and falls. Things like loose pallets, shrink wrap, or out-of-place tools can make someone trip, while humid environments or slippery surfaces can lead to slips and falls. These accidents can lead to injuries like sprains, broken bones, or more severe injuries.

Electrical and chemical hazards

Warehouses often use a lot of electrical equipment and might store chemicals for cleaning or other uses. Problems like faulty wiring, mishandling materials, or not storing things properly can cause fires, explosions, or chemical burns.

Ergonomic hazards

Doing the same tasks over and over, lifting things the wrong way, or having a poorly set up workstation can cause injuries from strain, such as muscle pulls, back problems, and issues like carpal tunnel syndrome. These injuries can develop slowly and might lead to long-term health problems.

Fire hazards

Warehouses that keep flammable materials, have overloaded electrical setups or don’t clean properly have a higher risk of fires. A fire can spread quickly in a warehouse, putting lives at risk and causing a lot of damage to property.

Knowing these risks and understanding the support available through workers’ compensation if an accident happens at work can help workers stay safe and protect their rights.
