5 most common injuries in workers’ comp claims

On Behalf of | Sep 26, 2025 | Workers' Compensation

After a workplace injury, the priority is getting care. The next step is figuring out how to pay for it and keep income steady. Workers’ compensation is meant to help with both, but many employees hesitate because they are unsure about qualifying.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported many work-related injuries and illnesses in 2021 and 2022. This data can help you determine how your injury fits and guide your next steps.

1. Exposure to harmful substances or environments

Over 634,000 workers were injured or became ill from dangerous workplace conditions, accounting for 28% of all workplace incidents. These injuries happened when workers were exposed to harmful chemicals, radiation, extreme heat or cold or loud noise. This type of injury is most common in manufacturing, construction and healthcare jobs.

2. Overexertion and bodily reaction

Overexertion and bodily reaction injuries affected 521,350 workers, or 23% of all cases. These injuries often occur due to lifting heavy objects, repetitive motions or awkward postures.

Common examples include sprains, strains and back injuries. Those in nursing, warehouse work and construction are particularly vulnerable.

3. Falls, slips and trips

Falls, slips and trips accounted for 450,540 injuries, or 20% of the total. They can happen in any industry.

Retail, construction and food service jobs see many of these claims. Wet floors, uneven surfaces or cluttered walkways often cause falls.

4. Contact with objects and equipment

A significant 20% of workers, or roughly 450,000 workers, were injured through contact with objects and equipment. This includes being hit by falling objects, caught in machines or hurt by tools. Manufacturing, farming and transport industries frequently experience these accidents.

5. Violence and other injuries from people or animals

While less common, violence and injuries caused by others or animals still affected 85,410 workers, or 4% of all injuries. This includes workplace attacks or animal bites that can happen to veterinarians, delivery workers and others. Healthcare workers, police officers and social service workers are also at higher risk for these types of injuries.

Workers’ comp is essential for recovery

Medical expenses for these common injuries can be substantial. Your time away from work to recover can also be lengthy. Workers’ compensation can help alleviate these financial burdens.

Workers’ comp is a no-fault system, meaning you do not have to prove your employer was negligent. This ensures you can access essential care and focus on healing without worrying about the cost. If the process feels overwhelming, a focused legal perspective can help you move forward with fewer setbacks.
